Mary was born on September 26, 1923 in Kessab, Syria to parents Garabed and Margarite Hatutian. In Syria, Mary lived with her parents, brother Zaven, and sisters Esther and Alice. Mary was employed as a school teacher where she earned the reputation as being quite the disciplinarian however when she left for the United States all of her students were sad to see her go.
Her brother Zaven came to the United States in the 1950’s to attend college. After Zaven was established, he sent for his parents and sisters. On November 11, 1966 sisters Mary and Esther emigrated to the US. Upon Mary’s arrival she shared a home in Kansas City with her parents and sisters. Mary found work as a seamstress working at Bonwit Teller and Harzfelds. Mary began the naturalization process and on March 30, 1972 became a US Citizen. Her parents, brother Zaven and sister Alice have passed, but Mary and Esther continued to live together as they have their entire life, neither ever marrying. Mary spent much of her retired years sitting on the floor next to the front window of her house reading the bible. Mary and Esther moved into an assisted living facility in Leawood three years ago.
Mary was a member of Summit View Church of the Nazarene and St. Garabed Armenian Church. Mary leaves behind her sister Esther, nephew Gary Hatutian, nephew David Hatutian, niece Jennifer Blake, and a number of great nieces and nephews.
