Mairi was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Chalmers. Mairi had a life full of adventure and experience – growing up in the Outer Hebrides, Mairi was evacuated during the war to Glasgow and then to the countryside to a tomato farm; she hated tomatoes for the rest of her life! She attended the College of Domestic Sciences in Glasgow qualifying as a Dietician and after moving to Ottawa, worked at the Civic and Grace Hospitals. She retired with Bill to Barrie, and Hamilton, where they enjoyed many happy years together.
Mairi leaves behind Anona Zmur (nee Mackay), Victoria, BC, Ken Mackay (Mary), Ottawa, ON, Rod Mackay, Edmonton, Alberta and Lorna Oleniuk (nee Mackay) (Dave), Hamilton, ON; and grand-children Robin Carter, Orion Zmur, Jamieson and Stirling Mackay, and Katrina and Jack Oleniuk.
Mairi was always known to speak her mind and to stand up for what was right. Described by her brother, Lewis, as feisty, she was an exemplar of Scotland’s motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit” or “no-one harasses me with impunity”. She and her beloved Bill returned to Scotland where they rekindled past memories which were often in her thoughts and, of course, in her stories. Mairi and Bill were active with the Sons of Scotland and she loved highland dancing. She was a master chef, an amazing seamstress and an avid gardener. She loved life.
Many thanks to The Idlewyld Manor, Hamilton, for all the care over the last several years. In her final years, Mairi needed considerable care and for this her family is grateful. Should you wish to make a donation in her honour to the Canadian Arthritis Society, please do; or donate to a charity of your choice. Thank you to The Cresmount Funeral Home in Hamilton.
A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when it is safe to travel and gather.
