LUIS A. GOMEZ, born February 15, 1957, passed away February 14, 2021. Beloved husband of Diana Centeno-Gomez, dearest father of Amanda Gomez; devoted son of the late Luis Gomez and Hilda Morales; dear brother of Gisela Gomez (deceased) and Hilda Gomez (Mario, deceased); loving uncle and friend of many. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hispanic Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program (HUMADAOP). Luis A. Gómez was a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico. Luis obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico in 1983. He was a loving, dedicated husband and father. He loved salsa music, basketball and football.
Luis was actively involved and committed to the entire Greater Cleveland Hispanic community since his arrival to Cleveland. He passionately advocated for the Puerto Rican community needs including employment, education and voting rights throughout Ohio.
He was a mentor, advisor and friend to many in the Hispanic community.
Luis was instrumental in the establishment and development of the Hispanic Youth Center, Casa Maria–Women’s Residential Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center, Casa Alma–Residential Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center, Coalition of Hispanic Community Service organizations and the Young Latino Network.
Luis received many awards for his community involvement due to his dedication including the Angel Guzman Lifetime Achievement Award – City of Cleveland, the Miguel Prieto Award - Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program, Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award - Northeast Ohio Roberto Clemente Committee and the Sister Alicia Alvarado Award - Cleveland State University. In addition, he was honored as the Padrino of the Puerto Rican Festival and Parade in 2011.
Luis favorite quote is: “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth", Roberto Clemente Walker.
