Hephzibah, GA—SFC John Rangel Jr. passed away on Thursday, February 18th at the age of 83. SFC Rangel was a loving spouse, father, grandfather and friend to many. SFC Rangel loved serving his country. He enlisted with the United States Army in 1956 where he honorably served for 20 years. During his time in the Army, SFC Rangel served with honor in the Vietnam Era doing two tours with the 1st Calvary Division in 1967 and with the 11th Calvary Division in 1967. He is recipient of the CIB Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (6), Presidential Unit Station, 2 Bronze Star V-Device Medals, and Expert Marksman Medal. After retirement from the Army, SFC Rangel dedicated his time to serving his community. He founded the 1st Calvary Chapter in Augusta assisting fellow veterans acquire their VA benefits. He also generously volunteered his time as Coach for the military youth. SFC Rangel touched many lives and his absence will be deeply felt, more especially by his family.
SFC Rangel is preceded in death by his parents; and son, Billy Joe Rangel.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Shirley; their three sons, Steve Rangel, David Rangel (Renee), and Danny Rangel (Christie); grandchildren, Ashley Silas, Bailie Rangel, Jordan Rangel, Evan Dalton, Garrett Rangel, Gavin Rangel, Terry McCoy, Janelle Rangel, Kaitlyn Smith, Ashley and Page; Great-Grandchildren, Mason and Karter Silas, Shayleigh Berner, and Tristan Warren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Tuesday, February 23rd at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road Augusta, GA 30906. The Funeral Service will be held at 12pm on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at our Lumpkin Road Chapel. Friends are welcome to join the family at Hillcrest Memorial Park 2700 Deans Bridge Road Augusta, GA 30906 following the service.
