David was the youngest of three children. We lived in San Felipe Courts, a government project which later became Allen Parkway Village. Our childhood was a happy one filled with love and freedom to run and play in the safety of a close knit neighborhood.
David attended Houston schools through the 10th grade. He then went to Southwestern High School in Waxahachie, TX. After graduation, he attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University from 1961 – 1964.
David’s career was in direct sales. He worked for Prince Gardner in California and Minnesota. He sold appliances at SE Teaff in Bellaire until they closed. He then worked for Knapp Shoes for more than 40 years. He earned cruises to Hawaii and the Bahamas and a trip to England through sales competitions. He worked the “Big E,” which is the 6th largest agricultural event on the eastern seaboard, for a month each year from 2002 to 2005. He was well respected among all his customers and co-workers.
When his nieces and nephews were growing up, he loved to take them to the beach on the weekends. We camped as a family in the Quachita National Forest in August every year and Dave was the one that was running around everywhere with the kids.
Family celebrations were happy times. He looked forward to the good food and all the family being together to celebrate holidays or birthdays. It was traditional for someone to take a picture of Uncle Dave sleeping in his chair after having the meal. Sadly, with Covid this past year, those good times were cut short.
Dave liked to be around young people because they made him feel young. His friends nicknamed him “Big D.” When he was in rehab recovering from his last surgery, all the patients and nurses called him “Big D.”
There will be an “empty chair” at our get togethers when we are able to have them again. The great nieces and nephews will never know their Uncle Dave. The circle has been broken again. But we can have every confidence that we will be reunited with him as he is now with those who have gone before us.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home from 10:00 am-11:00 am, with a funeral service beginning at 11 am and will be live streamed on the Earthman Southwest Facebook page. Graveside services will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
