Don’t hoard your kisses, pass them around…
Alice Lombardi passed away on March 11, 2021, four days shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born in 1929 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the child of immigrant parents from Pubnico, Nova Scotia, and lived most of her life in southern New England. She married on April 30, 1955, to A Richard (Rick) Lombardi, and proceeded to preside over a large Italian-Acadian-American family.
She loved to cook, she loved reading, she loved Old Lyme where they lived after Rick’s retirement (with some years spent as snowbirds to Tampa). She had a marvellous smile, a gregarious nature, and a huge and loving heart. Nobody left her table hungry, whether she was serving the Italian family red sauce or one of her perfect, flaky, melt-in-your mouth pies. She loved the ocean, and often returned to holiday in Pubnico where she enjoyed the lobsters, the blueberries, and the beautiful harbor. She brought her young family with her, and introduced them to the delights of Acadian culture, including the somewhat elusive charms of rappie pie. In addition to her American circle, she has many friends and family there who will also miss her.
She loved music, particularly jazz and swing. She was a terrific dancer and had a wonderful singing voice, and was much sought after for musicals, choruses, and variety shows but was somewhat shy of performing. The quotes are from one of her favorite songs, “100 years from Today.”
So laugh and sing, make love the thing, be happy while you may…
Above all, she loved her family, and we loved her. She and Rick were married and inseparable for 65 years. She is survived by him, daughters Mary Beth, Lisa, Liane (Brian Flannagan) and Janine (Wayne McCready), son Richard (Rhonda), and son-in-law Brian Sullivan; grandchildren Tyler, Cameron, Ian (fiancé Samantha) and Francesca Mack, Lincoln (Laura), Emma (Isaiah Bennet), and Marina McCready, Luke Lombardi, Patrick and Kyle Sullivan; great-grandchild Jessa McCready; sisters Mary d’Entremont and Joan Kelly; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and children of same. She was pre-deceased by her parents Beatrice and Aubrey, her sister Eleanor, and her daughter Regina Sullivan, with all of whom she is enjoying a reunion in heaven. She is also, no doubt, singing in the angel choir, and showing them a thing or two about how to swing it.
She will be buried in her beloved Old Lyme in a private funeral. There will be a public Mass and celebration of her life at a later date, when all her far-flung family and friends can gather. Anyone wishing to honour her life and memory can do so by a contribution to Connecticut Hospice in Branford CT.
