On Monday, March 22, 2021 Roger Lee Asbury (Poppy), passed away peacefully at UT Hospital with his loving wife of 54 years by his side. He was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, and friend of many. Roger was born on August 1, 1943 to Verna and Warren Asbury of Kenvir, Kentucky. He lived most of his life in Tennessee but remained an avid Kentucky fan. Roger graduated from Karns High School in 1961 and has remained active with a reunion committee all these years. Roger proudly served in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserve. He later retired from the United States Post Office, where he served as a supervisor in Oak Ridge. Roger was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he was active with his Sunday school class and he loved serving on the board for his Homeowner’s Association.
Roger was known for his sweet smile, kind heart, and storytelling. He never met a stranger and could have everyone laughing while sharing one of his many stories. Roger had a multitude of friends from high school, church, and his community. Roger would take weekend cabin trips, ski trips, beach trips, and have weekly card games with different groups throughout the years. He loved his time in the woods hunting with his best friends and son, and often traveled to compete when bowling with the ABC. Roger and JoAnna had been to 50 states together but always enjoyed a drive to the mountains to see elk and deer.
Of all accomplishments in his life, Roger was most proud of becoming a grandfather and was “Poppy” to Madison and Allie. He was their driver, dinner buddy, and beach pal for the last twenty-four years. Roger even adored and cared for his granddog, Gracie for the last fourteen years. Roger always had a positive attitude, loved the Lord, and was loved by so many. He truly lived life to the fullest.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Verna and Warren Asbury, sister and brother in law, Emma Lou and Joe Elkins, and his brother, Ray Asbury. He is survived by his wife, JoAnna Asbury, son and daughter in law, Mike and Tammy Asbury, grandchildren, Madison and Allie Asbury, niece that he loved like a daughter, Donna Woodall and her family-Gary, Tyler, Haley, Heather, Dustin, Dryden, and Drake, and sister in law, Patty Asbury, and so many special friends that Roger loved dearly.
The family will be receiving friends on Sunday, March 28th from 2-4pm at Weaver Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 4:00 pm. Family and friends will meet March 29th at 10:45 am at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 am interment.
