James Austin Posey lived a life worthy of celebration and admiration. Affectionately known as Jim, Sonny Boy, Uncle Jonny, Pops, and Posey, he made his grand entrance into this world on May 2nd,1935 to parents Ada O’Neal and Lewis Posey in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the eldest of 5 siblings: Willistean, Arthur, Lewis, Vera, and Henrietta.
He graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1954 where he proudly served as class President. He held their motto “We Strive Not To Be Equal, But to Excel” to the highest regard.
Respectably known as the protector, he dedicated his life in service to the United States Air Force, joining Squadron 3704 Flight 756 of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas before being stationed at Kirkland Airforce Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a military police sergeant.
With its spicy foods and picturesque mountains, New Mexico offered many charms that Posey held dear, but the “Land of Enchantment” held true to its title by giving him his most prized treasure - his beloved Dollene Frances Walker, whom he married on October 12th,1958.
Their love brought forth his three crown jewels: Sharon, Pamela, and Nikkole.
To witness James and Dollene on the dance floor was truly a magical experience. With his impeccable sense of taste, Posey was known for being sharp as a tack. He became the “who’s who” of Albuquerque- and with “My Lady Dollene” on his arm, he always stood tall with his head held high. Ever the socialite with his house parties, cruises, and travels with friends, he never met a stranger and was well loved by all he encountered.
Jim was very active in the community. He served as a poll worker, member of the local NAACP chapter and on the Sickle Cell Council of Albuquerque.
He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and served in ministry as a Deacon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a devoted member of Hoffmantown Church, before joining World Changers Church International in College Park, GA.
To call him hard working would be an understatement. Upon retiring from General Electric in 1991 after 24 years of duty, he stayed active by working at the New Mexico State Fair, dry cleaning delivery service, and in customer services at multiple Costco Wholesale locations, where he developed many cherished lifelong friendships.
James and Dollene relocated to Stockbridge, Georgia in 2004, where he served as one of the founding board members of the Brenleigh Park Homeowners Association.
He entered into eternal rest on March 27, 2021, transitioning of natural causes in his home. He is reunited with his parents, brothers, and grandaughter Tori at the pearly gates of heaven.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, his sisters and his daughters, whom he loves dearly.
Highly regarded as a father figure to sons-in-law Ruben Fisher, Alfred Burke, and Shalon Cowan, as well as to many nieces, nephews, and others, James’ legacy will be continued by his grandchildren Frances, Danielle, Yolanda, Desiree, Alfred James, Shalon, Zhane, and Xzavier, and through his great-grandchildren Taeja, Atreyu, Amelyana, Sky, Journey, & Markelas James.
