It was a sudden and unexpected departure that has left our family and all of his many friends and coworkers at a great loss.
My Larry was born on Monday, November 6, 1950 to Jerald Dean Taber and Dorothy Taber.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Penny Taber, his beloved daughter, Leah E. Johnston (Richard), their children Andrew and Sabrina,
his beloved son, Loren Dean Taber (Jamie), their children, Shayna Taber (Kye) and Lauren Taber, and his beloved son, Julian Taber (Amber), Larry’s adored and beloved dogs, Annie Bean and Tobe, who were truly his best friends.
Larry is also survived by his loving siblings Cynthia Barnett (John), Teresa Rabalais (Ray d.), and Kenneth Taber (Debra d.).
He is also survived by his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Billy Watt and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Larry attended and graduated from Roy Miller high school 1966-1969. He enlisted into and proudly served in the US Army from August 1970-1972. He served one year of active duty in Vietnam, after which he received an honorable Discharge.
His lifelong career began, after his military service, at Coastal States Refinery where he worked from 1974-1981.
He then worked for C.C.P.C. from 1981-1982. He began his more than 30 year career with Valero refinery in December 0f 1982. Larry had many different positions during his years at Valero Refining. He also received the prestigious Valero "Harry Walker top hand award” in 1995. He retired from Valero refining on March 31, 2013. After his retirement, he didn’t stay idle and once again worked in a different capacity as before with Valero from 2013 to 2018. After five additional post retirement years with Valero Refining, in 2018, Larry went to work with Pin Oak Terminals where he was currently employed.
In his long career he had many coworkers who became his lifelong friends. Please know, this meant the world to Larry.
During this time from 1974 to 2021 Larry and I loved, laughed and sometimes cried while we built our life together. We raised our three children together. Larry was always a busy man. When not at work, he kept an immaculate yard, and completed many amazing projects including working to help restore an old caboose at the Orange Grove Museum, collecting antiques and old rusted farm implements. And finally he worked to create our Beautiful “Buzzard Roost”, our little piece of the Country, our Heaven here on earth. His favorite thing to do each evening was to drive his Kubota down to our tree lined pond, sit and reflect, feed his fish and turtles and give thanks to God.
In 2010 Larry created the Facebook Group, which currently has close to 900 members, “We are Westsiders,” which reunited many old friends from way
back in our childhoods who had grown up on our much loved original west side of Corpus Christi. This website gave Larry more enjoyment than I think any of us could ever have imagined.
My Larry was the Best Daddy and Popo our children and Grandchildren could have ever had. He is the best man I will ever know and the love of my life. Larry was spiritually prepared but didn’t plan to die when he did or have any idea his time was near. He started many sentences with “If I ever Die…” this always made us giggle.
