James Donald “Jim” Moorhead, MCPO, USN Ret., passed away the 1st of April 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born to the late Edna I. Shackelford Moorhead and Harry G. Moorhead on April 11, 1933 in Fairmont, WV. Upon graduating with the Fairmont Senior High School Class of 1951, he enlisted and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. A 26-year veteran actively participating in the Korean conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade, three tours to Vietnam and several challenging assignments. He retired from active duty in 1977 as the Carrier Air Wing Three Maintenance Master Chief embarked in USS Saratoga CV-60. His desire to further serve his country led him to pursue a civil service career as a Tactical Aircraft Inventory and Configuration Manager, retiring from the Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Commodore’s staff upon the BRAC 1999 closure of NAS Cecil Field, FL. A patriot, who loved God and country, was a member of American Legion Post #137, VFW Post #7909, Fleet Reserve Association MAL and Moose Lodge #2020.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty J. Ausum- Moorhead, step-daughter Karen (John) Ausum, step-sons Scott (Sheila) Ausum, Craig (Sabrina) Ausum and last but not least #1 son James D. (Gale) Moorhead II.
A viewing will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, April 7th, 2020 and funeral service at 11:00am at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville followed by interment with full Military Honors in Oaklawn Cemetery.
