Known as Bill to the world outside of the Arden community, he was a dedicated son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, and a child of God.
Bill was born to George Monroe and Maggie Olivia McMeen Tullos on April 12, 1923 on a ranch outside of Caddo, Texas. His family moved to the Arden community when he was one year old where his parents began a ranching life. He had a normal rural childhood, learning to ride and help on the ranch at an early age. When his father passed away in 1931, his uncles and community friends helped his mother raise him. He attended Arden school and graduated in 1939.
Bill's deep patriotism drew him to join the war effort in 1942. He served as a bomber pilot with the Army Air Corp flying a B17 out of England into Germany. Margie began writing to him while he served. He came home to marry her and continue ranching. His goal in life was to be a child of God and take care of his family and his ranch.
Bill was dedicated to improving his ranch and ranching techniques. He joined many agriculture related organizations including Soil and Water Conservation where he served for 60 years; receiving many awards for his stellar ranching practices. He was told more events outside of his fences affected his operation than inside his fences. So he began serving -- as a district director and president for the local Farm Bureau and three years as vice president of that organization. He served on the Texas Beef Council for six years including two years as chairman. His opinions helped form many policies - local, state and federal.
In 2010, he was awarded the Golden Spur Award by The Southwestern Cattlemen Association for outstanding cattleman of that year.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mertzon where his parents were charter members. Later, he and Margie moved their membership to the First Christian Church in San Angelo.
He also served on the Merzton School Board for 25 years and many church related boards.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Margie. He is survived by his children George William Tullos and wife, Teri, and Carolyn Olivia Tullos McGehee. He loved his grandchildren, George W. Tullos, Jr., Jason Monroe Tullos, Michael Lee McGehee, Maggie Lynn McGehee and Miles Lane McGehee; and his eight great grandchildren and his one great-great grandchild.
Funeral service will be 10 am Thursday, April 8th at First Christian Church in San Angelo. A private family burial will be held at the family cemetery. Services under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
