Florence Welton, 93, a native of Neoga, Illinois (home of Alfalfa of Our Gang fame) passed away Monday, April 5, 2021. She was a devoted wife to Carl and mother of five children, who she raised Catholic, even though she was a Methodist.
She enjoyed golf, bowling and college basketball. She was a die-hard Duke fan and remarked once that if she had not married Dad, she would have liked to marry Coach K. She raised us kids to always wear clean, unholey underwear (you could never tell when you were going to be in an accident and have to go to the hospital), never sit directly on a toilet seat in a public restroom, and never get in trouble with the law. She always told us this would break her heart.
Thursday was cleaning day (ugh) and Friday was candy day. Mom could never go to sleep until the laundry was done and with five kids taking baths, she stayed up pretty late. Once we were playing Rummy Royal, Dad laid down his poker hand and had 4 of a kind. He remarked that no one could beat that. Our mom angrily replied, “The hell you say!” and laid down a royal straight flush in hearts! Mom made the best homemade pizza which became an often requested birthday dinner.
She is survived by her children, Colleen (Gary) Dunagan, Kathleen (Jack) Grant, Daniel (Linda) Welton, Steven Welton, and Patricia Welton; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Sleep peacefully, mom. The laundry basket is finally empty.
Mrs. Welton was the daughter of the late Mabel Evelyn Seidler Crockett and Edward Floyd Crockett and was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl James Welton.
Private graveside services will be held at Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Keith Welton will officiate. Special thanks goes out to the staff of Pine Pointe Hospice and her caregiver and devoted friend, Joann Thompson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Pine Pointe Hospice, 6261 Peake Road, Macon 31210.
