Joyce was born in Vancouver, Washington on June 25, 1935 to Brooks E. Payne Jr. and Leone Crouch. Growing up in Dade City with her grandparents Amberlee and Brooks Payne Sr., she attended Dade City Elementary School and graduated from Pasco High School. She briefly attended Florida State University before going on to earn a business certification from Massey Business College in Jacksonville. After moving to Temple Terrace with her family in 1966, she began working for Traveler’s Insurance Company. In 1970, she became the office manager at her husband’s State Farm Insurance Office. Joyce earned licensure in both insurance and real estate during this time. She continued working with Bill until they retired together in 1998.
Joyce was a longtime member of Mission Hill Baptist Church in Temple Terrace. She was also a member of several organizations such as Eastern Star, Las Sertoma Club, and the Temple Terrace Friendship Club. She enjoyed traveling, scrapbooking, reading, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. Joyce wrote that her proudest family moments were the birth of her daughter and grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and husband of 52 years, William “Bill” Hemingway. She is survived by her daughter Cheryl (Steven) Forehand, grandson Reed, and sister Patricia Weaver of Dade City. A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 14 2021 at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, Terrace Oaks Chapel, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. An interment ceremony will be held at 2:30 P.M. at Floral Memory Gardens in Dade City.
