Gene will lie in state from 5pm to 8pm for visitation on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 in the Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Director’s Pioneer Chapel, 5400 Bell St in Amarillo. Memorial services will be on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 10am in the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church Sanctuary, 3500 Bowie St with Pastor Mike Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Gene was born January 7. 1943 in St. Paul, MN, the youngest of three sons to George C. Spencer, Sr. and Irene Spencer. He attended schools in St. Paul and Rosemount.
He served six years in the Naval Reserve after training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago, IL. He married his high school sweetheart Marjorie Schleh on November 10, 1961. He worked in construction before they moved to Amarillo in 1974. Gene retired from Southwestern Public Service (Excel Energy) after 30 years where he worked as a heavy equipment operator in the Transmission Line Department. The last four years he was an inspector of the poles and transmission lines. His many enjoyments in life was traveling with his family, and friends, including many trips with his grandsons and great-grandchildren. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved spending time at his hunting land near Estelline. Gene and Marjorie were long time members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and by his oldest brother George. He is survived by his loving wife Marjorie, daughter Jeanette Nelson and husband Ken Nelson of Amarillo, brother Steve and wife Dorothy of Vadnias Heights, MN, grandsons Robert Pos ell and wife Jody of Gainesville, TX, and Spencer Nelson and wife Courtney of Amarillo, four great- grandchildren„ two nieces and three nephews.
The family would like to express their deepest care to the staff at The Reserve at Amarillo Memory Care Unit and the angels at Kindred Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be made to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 3500 S Bowie St, Amarillo, TX 79109, or to Kindred Hospice, 3232 Hobbs Ave, Suite A, Amarillo.
