He was an army veteran from the 82nd Airborne Division. He was very proud of his 82nd airborne division; he wore his airborne hat often and had stickers on his car. He loved to surf and was a well-known Long Board Surfer in Huntington Beach, California.
He was married twice. 1st marriage to Mary Schoonover with whom he had 2 children: Wendy Wickner and Sharmae Erickson and 2 stepchildren Tina Starks and Natasha Hatcher. He was married a 2nd time to Lonna Eneim with whom he had 3 children: Dana Wood, Danielle Wheeler. and Natalie Holton. He lived the last 30+ years as a single man, but always made time for his children. He ‘took turns’ visiting his children and their families over the years.
He is survived by a sister Vickie (Wood) Lewis and preceded in death by a sister Rennie Hill. He is survived by 18 grand-children and 5 great grandchildren (numbers include ‘step’ grandchildren and great grandchildren as he loved them all!). He was preceded in death by 1 great grandchild. He is also survived by his Aunt, Geraldene Huston and many cousins (his father R.G. was one of 10 children).
Darrell worked construction his entire life. He spent most of his time with his children and grandchildren. He lived in California until he moved to North Carolina for a short time about 12 years ago to be near his only son, Dana. He lived there for almost a year and has been in Austin, Texas since that time with his daughter Sharmae, son-in law John, grandson Andy and his wife Mandy, and great granddaughter Summer. While in Austin he worked for over 10 years with Terry Laney doing construction projects. He passed away on April 12, 2021 due to a massive heart attack. He is with the Lord and free of pain. We will see him soon!
