Sally Taylor Serpico, 85, loving wife of Daniel Serpico (now deceased), passed away, April 16, 2021, after an extraordinary life. Born and raised in Boston, she moved to the Cape and graduated from Barnstable High School. Throughout her life, Sally took risks and broke barriers. She was brave and strong. Sally was the first female captain to lead an all-women crew to win the Figawi twice. Additionally, she sailed around the Cape in an open-hulled 17-foot Daysailer with the same crew. She was a blue-ribbon quilter, Master Gardener, passionate knitter, worldwide traveler, patron of the Cape Cod Symphony, and lover of opera and theater. She also loved anything pink, sauvignon blanc, and a well-placed swear word (after all, she was a sailor). She was excellent at math, having spent most of her career as a bookkeeper for local businesses. Despite battling with recurrent cancer, she did not let it slow her down or dampen her spirit. She was a progressive thinker, politically engaged, and a fearless advocate for animals and the LGBTQ community. She was a fabulous cook, entertainer and lived a very active social life. Many will remember Sally zipping around town in her powder blue VW Beetle convertible.
Married to her loving husband, Dan, for 58 years, she was his constant companion and a wonderful partner who supported many of his own accomplishments with exuberance and wisdom. She was always willing to try new things and served as an inspiration to her family and extensive circle of devoted friends. She is survived by her loving sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel Ross Serpico (Kate Walsh) of West Hyannisport and their children: Patrick (Quincy, MA), Matthew (Dubai, UAE), Alison (West Hyannisport), Taylor (Austin, TX), and Mia (Washington DC), and Robert Andrew Serpico (Victoria) of Salt Lake City, UT. In addition, her beloved niece and nephews: Audrey Schrift (Douglas) of Gilbert, AZ, and their children Marcella and Chiara, nephews Russell Leach of Santa Rosa, CA, and Adam Leach (Deborah Lewis) of Camden, London, UK.
We must also recognize and embrace her lovely friends who remain unique and remarkable, an alliance of eclectic and compassionate artists who Sally truly adored. Sally will be laid to rest, under a tree, at Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, MA.
