Carroll J. Gilson, affectionately known as “Gil,” 105 years young, a longtime resident of Kirtland Commons, Deep River, CT, passed away peacefully April 17, 2021 with family, friends, and his beloved dog Coco by his side. Born February 2, 1916 in Haverill, NH to the late Lizzie (Johnson) Gilson and Herbert H. Gilson.
Gil was predeceased by his wife Yvonne (Haling) Gilson and baby son, Ronald, along with his daughter, Carol Ann (Gilson) Dean and his second wife Jacqueline (Hubner) Gilson and special friend Charlotte Thorpe; in addition to his 12 siblings and son-in-laws John Sevigny and Leonard Dean.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra (Gilson) Sevigny, son Carroll F. (Luke) Gilson and his wife Alice, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Carroll proudly served his country in the Army as a heavy-duty truck driver in WWII. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and UCONN women’s basketball fan; and he enjoyed many afternoons sitting with his dog Coco in the gazebo at Kirtland Commons.
Graveside services to include full military honors will be held on Thursday April 22, 2021 in Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Connecticut K-9, 239 Maple Hill Avenue, Newington, CT 06111. Carroll’s family wishes to thank Joann Hourigan, Executive Director of Deep River Senior Housing for all the special years he enjoyed at Kirtland Commons; and to Anna Pollack, Beth Fitzgerald and Astasia Cowell for their compassionate care of Carroll and Coco.
