After graduating from high school, DC served in the US Navy and worked for the railroad before becoming a money handling equipment technician for most of his career. DC married Carolyn Thomas Gray on July 18, 1964. DC and Carolyn moved their family from Marietta, Georgia, to Hickory, NC, in 1970 where he continued his career as a money handling equipment technician. DC spent his final working years working for the City of Hickory.
DC and Carolyn moved to Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House in Danville, VA, in 2017 to be closer to their family.
DC was a loving Husband, Father, Brother, and Grandfather. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and shooting sports. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hickory, NC and a member of Catawba Valley Wildlife Club and a Volunteer Firefighter for George Hildebrand Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
DC is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Gray, his three sons, Andy Captain (Dagmar) of Destrehan, LA, Chip Gray (Kathy) of Pelham, NC, and Stan Gray of Greensboro, NC. DC is also survived by his brother Jack Gray (Dawn) of Blue Ridge, Georgia, as well as six granddaughters, Alexis, Alisha, Ariel, Bailey, Charlotte, and Beatrice and three great-grandsons, Hendrix, Paris, and Cam.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church, 339 2nd Avenue, NW, Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service between 1:00pm-1:45pm.
