Curtis Lynn Sawyer, 90, of Fort Smith, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. He was born on March 31, 1931 in Little Rock, AR to the late Del Bert and Pauline Sawyer. He grew up in Dallas, TX, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School and Southern Methodist University. Immediately after graduation, he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force. Following his Air Force service, he returned to Dallas with his wife Reame to work for Texaco. In 1963, Curtis moved his family to Fort Smith to work as a petroleum landman. He worked for Stephens Production Company until 1980 when he started his own oil and gas company. He continued to take an active role in the business until recent months. Curtis was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith. He was on the board of the Community Rescue Mission; Girls, Inc. of Fort Smith; and had ties to the Good Samaritan Clinic. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Reame and a son, Robert Sawyer.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church and will be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube. After the service, family will greet friends in the Narthex of the church. Masks are required and social distancing is encouraged. Interment with a private graveside service will be at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Marianne Stambaugh and her husband David, of Tulsa; a son, Curtis Sawyer, Jr. and his wife Jeannine of Murfreesboro, TN; a special friend, Beth Watson of Van Buren; six grandchildren, Jonathan Stambaugh (Rebecca Shaughnessy), Kate Stambaugh, Hilary Stambaugh (Vincent Dale), Lt. Dalton Sawyer, US Navy (Felicia), Genevieve Sawyer Baumann (Greg) and Caitlin Sawyer Larkin (Noble); and three great grandchildren, Brendan, Elliott and Cora Baumann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Rescue Mission, 310 North F Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901 or to the Good Samaritan Clinic, 615 North B Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901.
