Raymond “Ray” Leo Crampton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and neighbor. He passed away peacefully in Orlando, Florida on April 24, 2021 at age 89 with his beloved wife Susan “Sue” by his side. His battle with medical issues in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Ray was known as a generous man who always had a tale to tell.
He was born to Ernest and Esther Crampton in Brant, New York on December 14, 1931. Ray was very proud of his Oneida Indian heritage, a member of the Bear Clan. Along with his 4 brothers and 2 sisters, he lived in New York until he moved to Cleveland, Ohio at 15. It was there that he built a life for himself and started his family, proving he could accomplish anything he set his mind to. Ray was well known in the community, often hosting polka concerts and social events for local law enforcement. He was a member of the Ironworkers Union and later went on to form multiple successful repair and maintenance companies specializing in garage doors.
After moving to Florida in 1982, he continued to grow his business, while volunteering at Lake Mary High School as their band truck driver and equipment manager for over 13 years. He was known around Orlando for his canine companions, with a service dog always at his side. Ray loved regaling people with wild tales of his life’s adventures, spoiling his grandchildren, and caring for others.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Susan “Sue”; his daughters, Debra “Glenda” Larson, Mary Ball, Sandy Schmoll, Laurie Schumacher, and Stephanie Moeller (deceased); his sons, Ray Crampton, Jr. and Nicholas “Nicky” Crampton (deceased); as well as his dogs, Missy, Princess and Stephie. He was lovingly known as “Papa” by his 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ray will be honored in a graveside service at 12:00 pm on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Gotha, Florida, followed by an indoor reception at Woodlawn in the Meadows Room.
