1947 graduate of Decatur Community High School, died April 23, 2021.
She was born May 21, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Darl and
Amy (Uehlin) Schweitzberger of Oberlin.
Metta was employed as a school secretary for 30 years. She was employed at
the Decatur Community High School Oberlin, Kansas, for two years and 28
years at the Lenora Schools, Lenora, Kansas.
She married Myron G. Johnson of Kanona on April 17, 1949. They celebrated
their 65th wedding anniversary in April 2014. After farming for the first few years
of their marriage on the farm near Kanona, the couple moved to Lenora in 1957
to be closer to Myron’s employment with the Rural Telephone Company.
Metta was active in the Lenora community, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother
for several years. She was very involved in the United Parish Church, teaching
Sunday school classes, choir director and when needed substitute pianist.
Metta was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as a District
Aide, Grand Marshal of the Grand Chapter of Kansas and as a page at General
Grand Chapter 1988.
After retiring, the couple traveled through the United States, Canada, Mexico,
the Caribbean, Europe and the South Pacific. They lived in Apache Junction,
Arizona, Sandpoint Idaho before moving to Spokane Valley in 2004.
Metta is survived by daughter, Johanna of Spokane; son Jim (Carrie) of Helena,
Montana; grandson, Eric (Anastassyia), great grandson Roman of Seattle;
granddaughter Sara (Jemal) Krokos; great grandsons; Louis, Herbie and Edwin
of Anchorage, Alaska, one step-grandson and one step-granddaughter and four
step-great grandchildren and close family friend Rod Wallgren of Hays.
A memorial will be held in Oberlin at a later time. Memorials
are suggested to the United Parish of Lenora in care of Paul’s Funeral
