With profound sadness we announce the passing of Barbara Godman.
Daughter of the late Arthur Barrett and Norma (Stevens), Barb was predeceased by her loving husband Eric Godman (2018), brother Edward Barrett (2007), and sister Norma Anne Mellon (2018). Barb is survived by sons Peter and Paul, daughter-in-law Jackie, grandchildren Elliot, Jonathan, Nicole, and Benjamin. Lovingly remembered by nieces and nephews Kate, Ken, Deborah (“Dode”), Renee, Joan, Ann, Susan, Chris, Michael and Robin.
After graduating with Honours from Schumacher High School in 1949, Barb worked in Toronto as a lab assistant for the Banting and Best laboratory, and later in reservations for Trans-Canada Air Lines. Barb and Eric were married in 1956 and travelled west to British Columbia on their honeymoon, eventually settling in Burnaby to raise a family. A loving mother to her two boys and a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren, it was in Burnaby that Barb built a home filled with art, music and a love of family .
In the early 1960’s, Barb began her involvement and life-long passion with the Sweet Adelines organization. She joined the Burnaby Chapter in 1962 and then the Westcoast Harmony Chorus in 1965. It was through singing that Barb formed the countless friendships that enriched her life. Barb’s only break with the organization came in the 60’s when she left in protest of the colour bar then in place.
Barb was very active in developing the “all Canadian” region 26 of Sweet Adelines in 1981-82 and served 9 terms on the Regional Board. Ever the voice of reason, optimism and determination, Barb was one of the cornerstones that founded this most progressive and high-profile region. During her several years on the Regional Board, she was twice Regent, twice IPR: a Convention Panel Secretary and multi-term Convention Coordinator. In addition to these duties, Barb enjoyed four years as International Extension Representative, traveling Western Canada to spread the word of harmony. Barb also served with Sweet Adelines International, as an educator and competition judges assistant. She served on the Westcoast Harmony chorus board of directors for many years and mentored many directors and administrators long after she was no longer active in the leadership.
A baritone, and sometime bass, Barb loved her work as a section leader, vocal coach and arranger and was known for her encouragement to “Let the music go forth unimpeded.” In 2012, Barb earned a lifetime membership in Sweet Adelines for attaining 50 years of membership, and the Westcoast Harmony chorus renamed their annual award the “Barb Godman Sweet Adeline of the Year” award.
The family wishes to thank the caring, professional staff at the George Derby Centre, Main South, for their unwavering dedication to Barb during the last few years of her life.
