Norman Edward Hayes, 94, died Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at his home in Austin, TX. He was born January 25, 1927 in Alpine, Alabama to the late Robert Marion Hayes and Lola Mae Mellon Hayes. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shizuko Hayes; three brothers, W.M. Hayes, James “Jimmy” Hayes, and Millard Hayes; two sisters, Doris Smith and Marie Wood.
In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. In 1950, during the Korean War, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and continued his service till he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1975. He received his Associates of Applied Science at Austin Community College in Austin, TX and ran his own successful HVAC business till he retired in 1997. That same year he began volunteering at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center with his friends from the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed volunteering and continued to do so till 2019. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing and bowling. He was a part of senior bowling leagues at Westgate Lanes and always enjoyed hanging out with his friends and improving his game.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hayes, son-in-law Shawn Hayes and granddaughter Tara Hayes; three brothers, Tommy Hayes, Joe Hayes and Ross Hayes, all of Vincent, AL; one sister Helen Beane of Leeds, AL and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on 6100 North Lamar Blvd. The memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow at the Cook-Walden/Memorial Hill Cemetery at 14501 North Interstate 35 in Pflugerville, TX.
