Leo A. Smith, of Dorr, was called from this world on May 4, 2021, to be reunited with Lucille, after 92 years on this earth. His battle with cancer over, he passed his way at home, surrounded by family.
Born on September 11, 1928 to Antone and Hartsel Smith of Belmont Addition, Michigan, he was the second of seven children. Preceded in death by Leonard and Betty, he is survived by Anna, Paul, Alice, and Richard. Leo was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, in 1998. They raised and loved a family of nine children. He is survived by Mark and Sandra Smith, Linda Smith, Michael Smith, Bernie and Lorie Smith, Karen and Jeff Lenhart, Phillip and Rose Smith, and Gary Smith. Deceased are Richard and Christine Smith. He was also loved by 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Leo, “Beck" to most who knew him, spent most of his working life as a truck driver. He spent his retirement playing golf in Michigan and Florida, working the New Salem Corn Maze, “contributing” to the local casino, and baking the world’s best cookies.
Leo worked his “bucket list” to the fullest. He ziplined in downtown Las Vegas at age 88, went rafting down the Nantahala River in North Carolina at age 89, skydived at age 90 and helicoptered the Grand Canyon at age 91. Plans to zipline Niagara Falls at age 92 were sidelined by the Pandemic.
Leo and Lucille were longtime members of St. Stanislaus Catholic Parish in Hilliards, MI and we’re quite sure he’s upstairs now waiting for the pine tree in the backyard to fall.
Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2021 at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home - Dorr Chapel, 4330 18th St., Dorr, MI 49323. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1871 136th Ave., Dorr, MI 49323 with visitation an hour prior to the service and prayers of the Rosary held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. In memory of Leo and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.kubiakcookdorr.com.
