Charles William Brown died. He was born in Good Hope, West Virginia, on December 5, 1924. He was the seventh of nine children born to his parents, Iza May and Willie Ray Brown. The family moved to Buckhannon, WV when he was thirteen. He was graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1942.
After his freshman year at West Virginia Wesleyan College, he entered the Army Air Corps in 1943. After completing Aviation Cadet Training, was assigned to the 13th and 20th Air Forces with a B-29 crew and served in the Pacific theater as a bombardier during World War II. Following military service, he returned to West Virginia Wesleyan and was graduated in 1949. In college, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi social fraternity and Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity. He also participated in varsity basketball. He earned his Masters degree in industrial recreation and his Ph.D. in counseling and guidance at Purdue University. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa education honoraries. He taught and coached from 1950-1952 at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He was married in 1952 to Martha Jane Swisher, also a West Virginia Wesleyan alumna and fellow teacher, who died of cancer in 1956.
He was assistant dean and Dean of Students at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, where he married Sarah Frazee Henley, a member of the public relations staff, in 1958. They became parents of three sons – Chip, Ted and Larry. They moved to Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, in 1962 where he was associate Dean of Men. They moved to the Winter Park area in 1971, where he was employed at the University of Central Florida in the Division of Student Affairs, for 20 years. After his retirement, he became temporary director of the Student Health Services at the University for eighteen months. During the retirement years, he and Sarah traveled extensively.
Bill, an Eagle Scout, taught Sunday School at the Winter Park Presbyterian Church. He was a member of National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and American Association for Higher Education. He was active in promoting the Employee Tribute-Memorial for the University of Central Florida. He was past president of the Arrowhead Cove Homeowners Association and past president of the UCF Retirement Association.
He is survived by his son, Charles Henley Brown (wife Angela) of Maitland, FL and their two sons, Trevor and Parker; a son, Theodore Ross Brown (wife Regina) of Maitland, FL, their daughter, Francesca, and their son, Billy; and a son, Lawrence Hugh Brown (wife Beth) of Maryville, TN, their daughter, Grace, and son, Zackary.
A Visitation will be held at Winter Park Presbyterian Church in Winter Park, Florida on Thursday, May 20th at 12:30pm, followed by a 1:00 Celebration of Life. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held at 10:00am the following day at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Winter Park, Florida.
