May 16, 1936 – May 20, 2021
John Hohmann, age 85, wonderful husband and devoted father, of Manchester, NJ, formerly of West Caldwell, NJ, passed away on May 20, 2021. He was born in Berlin, Germany, the son of Wilhelm and Luise (Plunz) Hohmann, and emigrated with his parents to America in 1949 at age 13 where he lived in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, NY, then Paterson and Fair Lawn, NJ, before moving to West Caldwell, where he resided for 37 happy years before moving to Manchester. He became a naturalized citizen in 1955. As a young boy he survived the bombing of Berlin during World War II.
He was happily married to Deanna Hohmann (D'Amato) for 47 years and is survived by Deanna, his daughters, Kristine (Frank) Iannetta and Kathrine Kennett and her fiance John Lang, nine grandchildren, Ashley (Mike) Hubble, Kaitlyn (Alex) Hayes, Justin (Alyssa) Kennett, Jessica (Nick) Corrente, Antonio, Samuel, Giuseppe, Crystal, and William and two great grandchildren, Abigail and Josiah. He is also survived by his cousin Guenter (Doris) Hohmann, brother-in-law Charles (Yvonne) D'Amato, and niece JoAnn (James) Kaba. He was predeceased by his first wife, Emma Hohmann (Gildart).
John honorably served in the United States Air Force for 3 ½ years and was stationed in France where
he played center forward on the base soccer team which traveled around France and Germany.
He was a faithful communicant of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Toms River, NJ, and formerly St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Caldwell, where he volunteered at the West Caldwell Care Center.
John was a printing pressman for 45 years, first working at Wood Press, Inc. in Paterson for 15 years and then at Beckley Press in Fairfield for 30 years retiring in 1997 at age 62.
He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, baking his “famous” Christmas cookies, watching movies, playing the piano by ear, and singing even when he did not feel well. He loved shopping especially his favorite place, ShopRite, which he visited every day. He also loved his fast food.
John was a generous, kindhearted person. One just had to mention or desire something and he would gladly take care of it. He gave cold drinks to the garbage collectors on a hot day and generously tipped every worker who ever came to the house, regardless of the quality of the job done.
He was reliable, responsible, gentle and sweet. In his youth he was physically strong and a fast runner. John was deeply loved by his family and respected by all – simply a man everyone liked.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021, 2 to 6 pm, at Anderson and Campbell 3010 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, NJ 08759. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 28, at 10:30 am at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, 1674 Old Freehold Road, Toms River, NJ 08755.
