A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a man who treated friends like brothers and sisters. Thomas Dowd Smith died suddenly on May 28, 2021. Born in Durham, NC, raised in Henderson, NC, and Montclair, NJ, Tom served his country in the US Navy after high school and then graduated from Va. Tech. (Go Hokies!) earning his BSME and later from Loyola College (MBA). He worked many years as a sales engineer in the power and process industry. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Holly Kephart Smith. The legacy he has left and of which he was proudest are his twin sons – Chris, married to Denise with son Cooper and daughter Sadie, and Josh, married to Jessica with daughter Abby and son Trevor. Tom was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He lived and worked in Maryland before retiring to Ft. Myers, FL, where he so enjoyed his golf buddies and sometimes enjoyed the game! A thrill was scoring two holes-in-one at Old Head in Ireland and Hobbits Glen in Maryland. Friends and family are gathering at Colonial Country Club on June 6, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Another gathering will take place at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, MD on Saturday June 12, 2021 from 4:00 to 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the American Heart Association. Arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society.
