Joe was born in Richmond, Staten Island, NY. He was baptized at St. Patrick RC Church in Richmond. He later relocated to Midland Beach where he attended Staten Island Margaret Mary’s School and subsequently New Dorp High School. Upon Graduation he went to work in the press room of the New York World Telegram. He left there to enlist in the United States Navy where he served for 3 years in the Pacific on the Light Cruiser USS Vincennes with the third and fifth fleet. Upon his discharge he went to work at the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier where he worked for 15 years. In 1965 Joe joined the International Union of Engineers Local 15 as a heavy equipment operator and was a member for 55 years. Joe worked on many jobs including the building of the Verrazano Bridge and the Staten Island West Shore Expressway. Joe is a member of the American Legion and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed playing golf, going on vacation, visiting Atlantic City and spending time with his grandchildren.
Joe married his wife of 73 years, Florence M. Raff at the Immaculate Conception RC Church in 1947. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Florence M Barre, son, Joseph Barre and his wife Susan Barre, grandchildren, Jennifer Shockey and her husband David, Ryan Barre and his wife Sara, 5 great grandchildren, Benjamin, Tatum, Alexander, McKenna and William and his sister Amelia.
