Born in Newark to the late Vivian (nee Musilli) and Michael J. Carpiano, Robert graduated from Barringer High School in 1958. His education continued at Montclair State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies followed by a Master of Arts in Guidance and Student Services from Seton Hall University. In 1989, he would receive a Certificate of Supervision.
Robert’s career as an educator spanned 41 years with the Newark Public Schools including 16 years at Seventh Avenue Junior High School, 18 years at Barringer Prep, and his final 7 years as the Chairman of the Guidance Department at Technology High School before retiring in 2003.
In addition to his command of the English language, he also spoke Italian and Spanish. Throughout his career he would be known as a conscientious and devoted mentor to all and considered every child he worked with to be his own.
His devotion earned him the Barringer Preparatory School Hall of Fame Award in 1996, the Benedetto Croce Educational Society Award in 2000, and the City Association of Supervisors & Administrators Leadership Award in 2003.
Outside of school, Robert was a party person who loved to socialize and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved animals and his hobbies and interests included history, science, gardening, cooking, reading, sports, and dancing. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was the devoted brother of Richard J. Carpiano and wife Celeste and Mary Ann Giordano and husband David, cherished uncle of Richard M. Carpiano and wife Jennifer and Adria Gear and husband Daniel, and adored great uncle of Michael David, Roman Vincent, John Gabriel, and Nadia Eve.
Visitation will take place at the LaMonica Memorial Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, on Thursday, June 10, 2021, from 4-8 pm.
The funeral will commence at the funeral home on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 9 am followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in St. Raphael’s Church in Livingston at 10 am and the entombment in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
