Robert V. Bashforth passed away peacefully Saturday, June 5, 2021, at his home in Burlington. Born in Oakland, California, he was raised by his mother, Ann W. Bashforth. After graduating from high school, he served two years in the Navy on the aircraft carrier, USS Antietam. He married Colleen Gallagher on December 18, 1948. They had three children, Bruce Bashforth, Gail Bashforth Draper and Glenn Bashforth.
While still in California, the family spent much time camping and boating. The family moved from Reseda, California, to Roy, Utah, and from there to Marysville, Washington, in 1962, where Bob worked at the Boeing Aircraft Company and then Scott Paper Company, which he retired from. Bob enjoyed motorcycles and building/flying radio controlled model airplanes. Along with some of his friends, he was a founding member of the model airplane club, E.R.M.A. – Evergreen Radio Modelers Association. After all three kids had moved from home, he earned his private pilot’s license in 1975. All three of his children and he spent many enjoyable hours at Arlington Airport “hangar flying”. More than once, his daughter had to prompt him to come home for dinner. He enjoyed flying his Cessna 172 along with Gail and her Cessna 140 and Glenn and his Baby Great Lakes. We were a flying family.
After Colleen passed, Bob spent many weekend dinners at his daughter’s home in Arlington. It was during one of these dinners he met his future second wife, Lois Tompkins, whom Gail had invited as well. Lois was a friend of Gail’s and they had been members of the same flying club. Apparently Bob and Lois hit it off as they married on February 14, 1993. They spent much time traveling around the states. Lois passed away in April of 2019.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Ann, his wife, Colleen and his son, Bruce. He is survived by his daughter, Gail, his son Glenn, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
A private memorial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery where Bob will be interned in the same niche along with his mother, Ann, his first wife, Colleen, his son, Bruce and his second wife, Lois.
