Following graduation from Holland High School in 1943, she worked in defense plant #5 in Holland, Michigan before becoming an executive secretary to the presidents of several local companies. She married her high school sweetheart, William DeVries, after his return from World War II in 1946. They were married for 67 years until his death in 2013.
As a mom, she made holidays, birthdays, and everyday life very special. The house was decorated for the occasion, parties and Christmas teas were held, and fun and laughter filled the home. Jean was a very talented artist, teaching classes and decoratively painting many special pieces for family and friends over the years. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and contributing to the annual Christmas Bazaar. She was also very active in the Holland Christine Van Raalte chapter of the Questers.
She is survived by her two daughters and their families, Suzanne DeVries-Zimmerman and Lynn Zimmerman, grandson William and fiancée Sable Potter; Christine and Kurt Hornby and granddaughters Victoria Alman, husband Ryan and great grandson Luke; Maria Hornby and fiancé, Max Babits; and her brother, Dr. George Wennersten.
A memorial service celebrating Jean’s life will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 994 Paw Paw Drive, Holland, MI. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or First United Methodist Church.
