She was born in Charlotte, NC and graduated from the University of North Carolina, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to do a one-year internship at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC as a medical technologist.
Doris was an avid volunteer throughout her life. After retirement she and her husband, Dr. James Clarke, resided in North Carolina, Minnesota, and Colorado Springs. They received the NC Governor’s Award for Volunteerism for their work at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC and also spent a year volunteering at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, AK.
Mrs. Clarke is survived by her sons, Bill and Tom, their spouses, 5 grandchildren,10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Patricia, and her brother Bob.
A private memorial service will be held in Asheville, NC at a later date.
