Dr. Morris McEwen passed away peacefully on June 10, 2021 at Levine-Dickson Hospice at Aldersgate. Born July 8, 1945 in Queens, NY to the late Helen Webb and “L.M.” McEwen, Jr., Dr. McEwen was 75 years old.
An ear, nose and throat surgeon turned forensic psychiatrist who was known for his generosity, Dr. McEwen was respected and loved by all. From performing minor surgeries at the kitchen table to seeing patients for barters or at no charge, Dr. McEwen was known as a “wizard” who helped even the most complex cases to fully live their lives. He was a highly-respected and prestigious forensic psychiatrist performing evaluations at the Mecklenburg County Jail, the Union County Jail, and the North Carolina Board of Nursing. He owned and operated a private practice, “Psychiatric and Forensics Associates”, that served the greater Charlotte region for more than 25 years.
In addition to his expertise in addiction medicine, Dr. McEwen was a beloved Christian counselor who dedicated himself to helping, advising and guiding hundreds of people on their spiritual paths of growth and development. He was an alumnus of Myers Park High School and the medical school of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed residencies in otolaryngology at the University of California- Irvine, and in forensic psychiatry at the University of Florida.
Dr. McEwen is survived by his children, L. Max McEwen of Charlotte, and Dr. Laurel McEwen of Paris, France; his grandchildren, Harper McEwen (5) and Logan McEwen (3) of Charlotte; and his sisters, Kathy McEwen and Bonnie McEwen of Charlotte.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 am followed by the funeral service at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Calvary Church, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Rd., Charlotte. Interment will be private.
