Joan Marie Orten of Dighton, Massachusetts passed peacefully in her sleep on Saturday at her daughter’s residence in Swansea at the age of 80 after a brief illness. Joan was an active member of her community, she was one of the first female softball coaches of Swansea Girl’s Softball League, leading the Cobras to victory three years in a row, as well as running the Swansea Little League Snack Shack for a number of years and participating in the Somerset Bocce League. She worked as a Unit Assistant at Charlton Memorial Hospital for 32 years.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents George Furtado and Angelina (Farias) Furtado, sister Joyce Fitzpatrick and husband Robert Orten, of Dighton. She leaves behind three sisters, Marion Seymour and her husband Jerry of Colorado, Rose Trapp and her partner Don Henry of Florida, and Janet Sullivan of Somerset, as well as her three children, Robert Orten and his partner Karen Obuchon of Dighton, Brenda Hyland and her husband Michael of Swansea, and David Orten and his wife Kimberley of Swansea. Joan also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Stacy Garcia, Jen Mello, Shawn Hyland, Sabrina Vest, Elizabeth Hyland, Tanya Orten, David Orten and Mackenzie Orten, eight great-grandchildren, Taylor and Nathan Sarnecky, Gage and Madison Mello, Cameron and Vivian Hyland Jedidiah Vest and Nova Hyland Zen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral Service will be Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 10:00 AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea followed by burial in Vinnicum Woods, Swansea. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be made to Community Autism, 33 James Reynolds Rd., Swansea, MA 02777.
