John Mahnick, Jr. 81, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2021. John was born on October 8, 1939, in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania to Mary Mahnick (Ostoffie) and John Mahnick at Sewickley Valley Hospital. He lived in Pennsylvania with his parents, brother, Rick and sister Carol, until he got married. He graduated from Quaker Valley High School in 1957. He played clarinet in his high school band. After high school, he attended Val-Tech auto mechanic school. He married his first wife Maxine Elliott April 21, 1961. They had twin boys, Curtis and Craig Mahnick in 1966.
John served in the United States Air Force. He joined May 31, 1962. He was able to travel to many Air Force bases. While stationed at Austin-Bergstrum, he met his second wife Ina Mahnick (Duran). They were married from January 4, 1980 until Ina’s death on November 27, 2017. After the wedding ceremony, they immediately moved to Utah where John had been transferred. While living there, John learned to ski. He took many ski trips and tried to go once a year.
John was later transferred to Arizona, where he decided to retire after 27 years. He retired as Senior Master Sergeant. John and Ina then moved back to Texas where he had bought a home in Southeast Austin. He started his second career with the IRS in 1984. He graduated from Park College and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Accounting.
John became a big longhorn fan. John and Ina were season ticket holders to the Longhorn football games. He later bought a recreation vehicle and tailgated to all the home games. This is where he earned the nickname “RV John.” He would drive his RV and park it close to the stadium every home game. He would park on Friday and stay until Sunday. He would party with the same group of friends. Every year his close group of friends would attend the OU game and then travel to Louisiana for Ina to gamble, one of her favorite past times.
He retired from the IRS in 2006. John’s goal was to travel in his new RV with his wife. They were able to do some traveling after he retired. He also enjoyed playing golf. His favorite buddy was his Chihuahua, “Pico,” who went everywhere John went. John was a very caring man who enjoyed life and love to have a good time. He was very charismatic. He loved his family and friends. He will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Mahnick; his father John Mahnick; baby, Curtis Mahnick and wife Ina Mahnick. He is survived by his sons, Curtis Mahnick, wife Jackie, Craig Mahnick, wife Tracey; stepdaughter, Eva Thompson, husband Mike; stepson, Jesse Villegas, wife Sue; sister Carol Conway, husband Rich; brother Rick Mahnick; grandchildren, Brittany Bardeleben, Dominique Mahnick, Dom Trevor Mahnick, and Garrett Mahnick; great-grandchildren Natalia Mahnick , Colton Bardeleben and Riley Bardeleben.
Funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at St Peters Catholic Church located at 4600 E Ben White Blvd, Austin, Texas 78741. The Rosary will begin at 9:00 am and Mass at 10:00 am.
