Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Albert E. and Margaret A. (Gifford) Frates, he was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Parish and St. Mary’s Parish, Fairhaven.
John was a truck driver for over 40 years, having worked for several companies, including the Port Authority and doing so with much pride. He drove the trolley in downtown New Bedford until his retirement. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, participating in many events throughout the years. He spent many hours playing with his great grandson Brayden and adored his two great granddaughters Lyla and Zoe.
He is survived by his daughters, Kicia Furtado of Acushnet and Kelly Thomas and her husband Michael of New Bedford; six grandchildren, Jeremy Furtado and his wife Lauren, Justin Furtado, Jared Furtado, Paul Mattos, Jr., Joshua Mattos, and Timothy Mattos; a great grandson, Brayden Mattos and two great granddaughters Lyla and Zoe Furtado; a brother, Peter Frates of Wareham; and many nieces and nephews to whom he was very close. He was the father of the late Christopher Frates and brother of the late Albert and William Frates.
His funeral will be held at 9:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Joseph’s Parish, 74 Spring St., Fairhaven.
