James Kenneth (“Ken”) Falstad passed away peacefully on September 30, 2021 at the age of 96. He was born in Garrison, North Dakota on a farm where he grew up. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Engineering.
After college, he met and married Patricia (“Pam“), and they began their adventure together, moving first to Inglewood California. They then moved to Santa Barbara California where they had their first daughter, Dana. After several years in Santa Barbara, Ken and Pam decided to apply for graduate school at UC Berkeley. Ken obtained his Masters in Structural Engineering from UC Berkeley and they moved to San Diego where their second daughter, Patricia (“Trish“) was born.
In the 1970s, Ken opened his structural engineering practice in La Jolla, California and remained in the same office for over 45 years until he gave up his practice at age 93. Ken so cherished his bike rides to and from his office and his daily lunch walks “down to the Cove”. He was also an avid and enthusiastic banjo player, and loved camping and hiking,
Ken was extremely blessed to have wonderful caretakers until the very end, who constantly and lovingly attended to his every need. A family could not ask for more.
Ken is survived by sister Patricia (“Pat”), daughters Dana Falstad and Patricia Falstad Ryan, and grandsons Patrick and Sean Ryan. Ken was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all.
