Margaret Holliday Evans Clark, 61, passed away peacefully after a long illness at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS on October 7, 2021. Margaret was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister,
aunt, and friend to all who knew her. Her life was a testament to her love of God, family, and friends.
Margaret is now in the arms of her Redeemer and was a faithful servant to the end. Her positive and
loving spirit, infectious laugh, and generosity were hallmarks of her life.
Margaret was born and raised in Jackson, MS as the third of four children. She was a graduate of Jackson Prep and Mississippi State University where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. After graduation in 1981 she worked for Mississippi State as an admissions counselor before obtaining her master’s degree in communications from the University of Georgia.
Margaret started dating her husband, Robert, after bumping into him on a bike ride in Belhaven in the
summer of 1985, and they were married on December 27, 1986. They promptly moved to Newport, RI,
where Robert was a naval officer. Margaret made friends everywhere they lived, including Jacksonville, FL, North Carolina, and Birmingham, before settling on Lookout Mountain, TN where she and her family lived for 17 years before she moved to St. Catherine’s in 2020.
Margaret’s life was focused on faith, family, and friends. She was a member of Highlands Presbyterian
Church when she relocated to Jackson and Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church when she lived on
Lookout Mountain, TN. She loved spending summers working at Camp Desoto. As her two sons, Houston
and Hampton, began attending school, she returned to the classroom at UT of Chattanooga to teach
public speaking, where she was beloved by her students for her compassion.
Margaret loved to make crafts for her family and friends. Her sense of humor brought many smiles and
laughs to everyone she met, and she loved having hospitable gatherings at her home. She loved writing
and made several cookbooks as Christmas gifts with her many sayings and drawings. Margaret also had
a beautiful voice and sang at many weddings of her friends, having gotten a great start in singing in the
youth choir at Galloway Methodist Church. She left an indelible mark on those who knew her, and she
was always on the lookout for those who could use a friend.
Her family would like to thank her caregivers and staff at St. Catherine’s Village, especially her loving
sitters Nikki Lewis, Pat Thompson, Mary Watson, Mary West, Willie Mae Garner, and Willie Jean
Howard; in addition, her many caregivers and friends from Lookout Mountain and Thrive at Brow Wood
as well as Kindred Hospice.
The family Margaret leaves behind include her husband, Robert, and two sons Houston (Grace Anne)
and Hampton; sister Robin (Norwood) Smith, brothers Dusty (Helen) and John (Camille) Evans, sister-in-law Anne Toy Gathings (Robby), brother-in-law James Clark (Daphne) and many nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Houston and Anne Evans.
There will be a visitation on Monday, Oct. 11th from 12:30pm to 2pm followed by a service at Highlands
Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland, MS, officiated by Joseph Wheat and Joe Novenson. The service will be livestreamed at Highlandspca.org. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Highlands Presbyterian
Church, Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice.
