Edith Lotspeich Brown, age 92, of Meadows Place, Texas passed away into the loving arms of her Lord on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Edith was born September 5, 1929 to Roy Sanford and Jewel Gray Lotspeich in Robstown Texas, later moving to Houston before she started school. Edith graduated from John H Reagan High School in the Houston Heights at the age of 15. A few years later, her family moved to Russellville Arkansas. Upon his discharge from the US Navy, she met and later married Edgar Lavern Brown on August 1 1947. Shortly thereafter, the new couple returned to Houston where he became a journeyman sheet metal worker in Union 54.
They lived in many places around Houston before buying their first home in Lamar Terrace where they raised three children. While raising children, Edith actively volunteered in multiple school and civic organizations including Girl Scouts and PTA. The young family were active members of Westheimer Baptist Church until it moved and then became members of Richmond Plaza Baptist Church in Bellaire Texas. At both churches, she was involved in teaching Sunday School, Bible studies, GAs, and missions as well as being church secretary.
Throughout her life, she was a loving and devoted family-oriented daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Anyone who entered her home was always made to feel respected and welcomed. She had a special spot in heart for her dogs, mostly Shih Tzus.
After their children grew up, Edith and Lavern spent many happy hours traveling for naval and family reunions. She also enjoyed all types of history, especially family history. For several years, she was a member of the Houston Genealogical Forum. She loved reading all types of literature, especially her Bible. She collected cardinals and churches, among other things. Edith loved to spend time outside, working in her yard with her plants, or inside, cooking for her family including the best lemon meringue pies.
Edith nursed both her mother and her husband when they were terminally ill. Although she herself had many physical ailments, including surviving breast cancer twice, she overcame with a strong will and love for life and family. Not only would she not give up on herself, she encouraged others and would never allow her family to give up on themselves. Edith set high expectations for herself and all those around her.
She is survived by brother James Lotspeich, daughter Karen (Charles) Whiteside, son Roy (Spring Pettenger) Brown, and daughter Brenda Brown, grandson Kevin C Brown, granddaughters Amy Renee & April Whiteside, “adopted” grandchildren Devin, Sienna, Payton, and Nevaeh Pettenger, and great-granddaughter Paisley Rae Brown, as well as many other loving family members and friends. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Lavern, numerous sister and brother in laws including Bill Ware, Joyce and Edwin Shinn, James F. and Janice Vinson Brown, Quillon Connerly, and Jeanie Lotspeich.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 18th, 2021 at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 19th at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas at 1pm.
