Gerald A. Dale, a resident of Delray Beach, FL, and Hull, MA died surrounded by his family Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Born during WWII, Mr. Dale grew up in Dorchester and Mattapan, and briefly moved to East Los Angeles as a child before moving back to Boston.
He graduated from the English High School, and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a master’s from Cambridge College.
Mr. Dale worked many jobs in his early career, including bank teller, sodding grass for the Boston Patriots at Boston University Field and working for his father’s business, Dale Tire Company.
Mr. Dale found his calling in education during de-segregation, working for the Jeremiah E. Burke High School, where he would meet his future wife. Later he worked as a corporate trainer for Agfa/Bayer Corp., and went back to teaching as a substitute for the John D. O’Bryant High School before retirement.
Devoted husband of 39 years to Pamela J. Hilton, Mr. Dale was the loving father of Emily H. Dale and her husband Michael J. Murphy of Quincy, and Jeffrey R. Dale and his fiancee Ariadna G. Martinez, also of Quincy. Loving brother of Linda E. and her late husband Steven R. Aronson of Marina Bay, Quincy, and step-sister Judith M. and her husband Marc Shiner of Wellington, FL. Excited grandfather of Lilith R. and Dorothy J. Murphy. Uncle to Derek J. and Pamela D. Aronson, and brother-in-law to the Hilton siblings, R. Michael, the late Stephen R., Elizabeth A. Pellegrini, Scott A., James D., Eric P. and families. Brotherly cousin to Robert Kaplan and his wife Kathleen Mangione of Natick, and Rochelle (Shelley) and her husband Alan Abrams of Boynton Beach, FL, among many other cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Predeceased by his parents Samuel N. and Pauline (Koopetz) Dale, step-mother Marion Myers Dale, and step-brother Jeffrey P. Myers.
An avid sports fan, Mr. Dale witnessed many classic and heartbreaking Boston sports moments live, including Ted Williams’ final game in 1960, Bucky Dent ending the Red Sox’ season in 1978, and Tom Brady relieving an injured Drew Bledsoe in 2001.
He was a fan of the opera, Sinatra, singing, “Jeopardy,” traveling, tweeting, and eating. And an avid proponent of vaccination and mask-wearing for all.
