Marty was born in Ottumwa, to Verlin & Nina (Fry) Francis. She married Walter J. Figg in Ottumwa on September 21, 1951. They were married 67 years. He preceded her in death on October 15, 2018.
Marty graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1948 and the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa in 1951, where she met Walt. After graduating she worked as an assistant to Dr. Ullman in Davenport, then became an Industrial Nurse at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1952 to 1960. After children, and when they started school, she worked half days at the hospital seeing patients of Dr. R.B. Anderson. She also was a volunteer at the former St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary.
After her husband’s retirement, they spent their winters for 29 years at their condo in Bradenton, FL and summers at their Davenport home. She was an avid golfer winning many tournaments and scoring a hole-in-one.
Marty is survived by her children, daughter Lynne (Tim) Thompson of Bettendorf and son, Jay Figg, of Davenport and one beloved granddaughter, Kelly Thompson. Marty was the biggest fan of Kelly’s activities—she was her life.
Marty was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Dr. J.D. Francis.
