of Audubon and Berwyn, PA, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2021.
Born in Mt. Carmel, PA, Joanne graduated from West Catholic Girls High School, Immaculata University (Music, Class of 1949), and later earned a Master’s degree in Music Theory from Temple University. A lifelong musician, Joanne was the organist and choir director for over 40 years at St. Colman’s Parish in Ardmore. She provided the music for numerous weddings and other services at churches throughout the area and taught piano. She belonged to the American Guild of Organists and was an avid member of the Great Valley Women’s Club.
Joanne and her husband Carl met in Ocean City, NJ, during college, and were married in 1950 at Villanova Chapel. Joanne, Carl and their family lived in Green Bay, WI, and Edina, MN, for 17 years before returning to PA in 1970 and settling in Berwyn. Ocean City remained a favorite yearly destination for the family, and the couple also enjoyed traveling in Europe and the British Isles. Joanne loved her various pet cats, a glass of Chardonnay, and watching the sunset over Valley Forge Park.
Joanne was the beloved wife of the late Carl J. Annas Jr., loving mother of Mary Beth Myers (Philip), Carl J. Annas III (Margo), Christopher Annas, Michael Annas (Mary), and Jeanne McCarthy (John). Loving Nana of Brian Myers (Kelley), Christopher Myers, Jennifer Annas (Zach Gerber), Amanda D’Elia (Tony), Jeffrey Annas, Jessica Tiagwad (Matthew), Haley Andreone (Kevin), Patrick Annas, Ellen Annas, Matthew McCarthy (Kristy), Brendan McCarthy, and Meghan McCarthy. Dear great-grandmother of Evelyn, Kathryn and Mason Myers, Olivia Gerber, Ava and Anthony D’Elia, and Owen McCarthy. Joanne was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Shovlin, and sister of the late Sister Regina Cecilia IHM.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Wayne on Friday, October 22. Visitation from 9 AM until 10 AM, followed by the funeral Mass. Interment private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joanne’s memory may be made to Immaculata University, Department of Music.
