Dan was born in Newport, RI, the second to the youngest of 8 children. His father, Robert was a chef in the US Navy, while his mother was a wife and mother at home raising their 8 children. His family moved to Portsmouth in the early 1970s. He was a 1974 graduate of Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, RI. At 15, he started in the household/moving industry working alongside his older brothers. He then worked at Bowler Van & Storage / Bekin Van Lines right out of high school until leaving Portsmouth. In 1979, after the Blizzard of '78, he rode his motorcycle cross country to California where he settled in sunny San Diego with his wife Lucienne (Picard).
When he arrived in San Diego he worked for San Diego Mayflower Moving & Storage from 1979 -1992. He then worked for Ace Relocations/Atlas Van Lines for the past 29 years. Dan has always been in the moving industry with his self-proclaimed title 'Household Used Furniture Relocation Engineer'; he enjoyed his job and loved every day of work.
He was set to retire November 12.
Dan and Lucienne went to high school together, started dating in 1974, married in 1981 and started their family of two kids soon after. He was not only a provider but guider and protector of Lucienne throughout their marriage. He was easy going and did whatever was needed for his family to want for nothing. Although he traveled a lot, he was active in his children's lives. He was a coach for Little League and went on Father/Son Boy Scout campouts each summer. He was able to participate in the Father/Daughter dance during the annual dance recital with his daughter and an overnight excursion on an old boat with a bunch third graders. He never missed an important event in his children's lives and was happy to participate when he could.
Dan considered himself a simple man - shorts, T-Shirt and of course a bottle of Budweiser and he was a happy man. He had an unlimited amount of "useless knowledge" as we like to call it - information about everything and anything. If you were playing trivia, you'd want him to be your phone-a-friend. Some of that "useless knowledge" was actually useful at times - you could call him from any city, state or street in the USA and he could give you directions to where you needed to go.
Dan is survived by his wife-Lucienne (Picard) Havey of San Diego; a son, Christopher Havey (Marianne) and granddaughter Isabelle of Round Rock, TX; his daughter Danielle Havey (Dupree Johnson), and a granddaughter on the way (due April 2022) of Weehawken, NJ.
He was the 7th of 8 children born to Robert & Rosemarie Havey who have preceded him in death. His brothers Robert (Mickey), Patrick, John, Donald and his sister Rosemarie (Susie) Woleck. His brothers William and Paul preceded him in passing.
A memorial service for Dan will be held Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 1:00 PM at El Camino Memorial Park, Chapel of the Bells, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121.
