Mary Evelyn Cooper Guenther was born on January 8, 1939 in Pensacola, Florida. She was the second of four children born to Curtis and Annie Mae Cooper. Mary grew up in and around the water and sunshine and continued a lifelong love of all things outdoors. Mary attended Pensacola schools and assumed she’d always live in Florida.
Enter a handsome Naval photographer named Robert D. Guenther, and a fateful double date. Mary and Robert fell in love and married on November 16, 1956, after Mary graduated from Pensacola High School in May of 1956. The newlyweds settled in to married life, and their first child, Bobby, was born in Pensacola.
When Robert was discharged in 1959, he moved the little family to Baytown, and went to work. A favorite family story is that Mary cried all the way to Baytown, but she completely embraced her new home, and their second child, Roger, was born in 1960. Mary became a great boy mom, supporting Bobby and Roger in all of their sports and activities.
She went to work at Goose Creek CISD and quickly became a beloved employee. Mary was known to bring in home baked goodies, and to always have a smile and an upbeat attitude. She loved spoiling her grandkids, cruising and traveling with Robert, and staying active in church and in the community.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sisters Carolyn Locke and Sue Howard. She is survived by her brother, Curtis Cooper, Jr. Her beloved husband Robert departed this life on June 13, 2021, and will greet his sweet Mary at the Pearly Gates. Although Mary’s dementia cruelly took so many memories from her, it could not steal the love she had for Robert, her children, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her legacy of love lives on in these grateful surviving family members: son, Bob and his wife, Christi; son Roger and his wife, Fabiana; grandson Travis and his wife, Lauren Guenther; granddaughter Kendall and her husband, Cameron Brooks; grandson Tyler Guenther; granddaughter, Emily Guenther; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Audrey Guenther.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, November 22, 2021, at Cedar Bayou Grace Methodist Church, 3700 North, TX-146, Baytown, Texas 77521 with a reception to follow.
