Roland was born in Lockney, Texas, on December 8, 1969, to Lupe and Guadalupe Garza. He grew up in San Antonio, where he graduated from Thomas Edison High School, and received an Associates degree from San Antonio College. Roland continued his higher education, graduating from the University of the Incarnate Word with a bachelors degree, and then earned a masters degree in counseling at Texas A&M University Kingsville, Texas.
Roland pursued a career in higher education, starting as a work study at San Antonio College. Following graduation, he worked in numerous roles at Alamo Community College District, including teaching, advising and working as a director. In addition, he led a program for helping at risk high school students complete their degrees, learn about higher education, and earn college credits, which resulted in numerous success stories.
Following his very successful 27-year career at ACCD, Roland moved to Denver, Colorado, and continued his career in higher education, taking a job at Community College of Denver. He returned to one of his passions in advising students and helping them to succeed in college.
Despite his success, Roland never forgot his roots, and over the years touched countless lives with his warmth, love, and gregarious spirit. He believed in living life to the fullest, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved to cook, ride his bike, and was active on many committees and with numerous charities.
