Long time resident of Charlotte, NC died after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. Phil passed away peacefully under the dedicated and compassionate care of the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC. Phil was born and raised in Caldwell County, NC and graduated from Happy Valley High School Class of 1942. He was one of five Children born to the late Everette and Annie Baird Bentley. Phil was drafted into the US Army in 1942 and served with the 485th AAA BN in the European theatre. After WWII, Phil served in the NC Army National Guard with the 378th Combat Engineer BN. During the Korean Conflict, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for actions under fire. Phil exited service to the nation obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
Phil married Mattie Ruth Philyaw in June of 1952. The couple moved from Caldwell County to Charlotte to begin their life together. Phil worked for several years for Courtesy Ford Motor Company before opening his own business, Bentley's Texaco, on Woodlawn Rd and Bentley's Amoco on South Blvd. He was trusted by the community and well known for
providing good service at a fair price. After his retirement, Phil became well known for his lawn mower/small engine repair business which he ran up until the weeks before his death.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mattie Ruth Philyaw Bentley of Charlotte; son, Phillip L. Bentley of Snellville GA, daughter, Gloria R Bentley of Charlotte and son, Jonathan E. Bentley of Charlotte; daughters-in-law, Vicki Barbour Bentley of Snellville, GA and Tanja Matthes Bentley of Charlotte; grandchildren, Justin and Elizabeth Bentley of Snellville, GA and Connor Bentley of Charlotte; and sister, Doris Smith of Charlotte.
The service to celebrate the life of Phillip H. Bentley will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service. Military Rites will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
