Wesley Wallace Washburn, M.D., Jr. born August 15, 1924, went to be with his parents and brother on July 28, 2010. He was a scholar of education and medicine; he attended Poly Prep as a young man. Wesley was a member of the United States Armed Forces Army Branch inducted in Boston, Mass. Upon honorable discharge attended Amherst College, after graduation he went to Long Island School of Medicine in N.Y. He moved to Brussels, Belgium where he worked in transplant research. He later went to Yale and then Harvard School of Dentistry in Boston, and then Galveston University of Texas Medical Branch where he worked under the direction of Truman Blocker, M.D. to complete his residency. He held degrees in biology, dentistry and a Masters in Experimental Embryology. Upon completion of his education he moved to Beaumont, Texas where he started his personal practice as the first plastic surgeon in Beaumont. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association.
In 1964 married Lulu L. Smith, M.D., his loving wife and light of his life. Wesley became a collector of arts and antiques, wines, oriental rugs and was a lover of guns and taught gun smithing in Colorado. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, tennis and traveling with friends. He was a contributor to many charities over the years.
Upon retiring Wesley began taking classes at Lamar University where he earned an Associates degree in Machine Tools. He said “to succeed in life one must gain a sense of accomplishment, give something back to society, do something that takes your mind off your worries and stay active mentally and physically”.
Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanor Wilson Washburn and Wesley Wallace Washburn, Sr. as well as his brother, Gordon Wilson Washburn. He is survived by his wife, Lulu L. Smith Washburn, M.D.; daughter, Liz E. Ford and husband Troy of Sioux City, Iowa; his four legged sweetie pie, Maxie; nephew, Gordon Washburn and wife Sonia of Houston, Texas; his angels, Maria, Cindy, Geanie, Norma, Mammie, Carolyn, Stephanie, Brenda and Dusty.
Visitation will take place Friday, July 30, 2010 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow in the Garden of Remembrance, Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
