Walter Joseph Harmeier, 83, passed away September 8th after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his brother, Albert Harmeier and son James Francis Harmeier Sr.. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Evelyn, six children Meg Harmeier, Mary Harmeier, Jack Harmeier, Jo Harmeier Gilbert, husband Blair, Terry Harmeier Forsythe, husband Greg, Tom Harmeier wife Natalie and daughter in law, Laura Harmeier. He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren: Jim, Adam, Nathan, Nick, Anna, Chip, Matt, Andrew, Liz, Nicole, Kristen, Lauren, Thomas, John, Paul, Sara Claire and nine great grandchildren: Susan, Savannah, Laura, Cole, Heather, Paige, Grace, Luke and Tyler. He leaves behind his 6 brothers and sisters: Mary Mackey, Grace Spencer, Margaret McCafferty, Ann Trier, Dick Harmeier and Bob Harmeier. Walter was a communicant at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Cordova. He served in the Navy Forces during WW II and the Korean War. He was nicknamed the “Candy Man” because of his long and stellar career as a confection broker. Walter was a loving and caring man who enjoyed spending time with his family and gave of himself unconditionally. He was athletic, loved the outdoors, and lived life to its fullest. He will be remembered as a man of character, integrity and true grit! Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 pm with the Rosary at 3:00 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. The funeral will be Monday, September 13 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with burial in Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Madonna Learning Center, LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center and St. Agnes Academy.
