Funeral services for Dorothy Griffin Allen, 97, of Calvert, Texas and Nacogdoches, Texas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 15, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Calvert, Texas, with Dr. Jeff Riley, Rev. Joe Bailey, and Rev. Ralph Powers officiating. Interment will follow at Calvert City Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, and from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010, at the First Baptist Church Calvert, Texas.
Dorothy was born on December 5, 1912, in Bryan, Texas, to William Richard Griffin and Ellen Elizabeth Franklin Griffin and passed away on Monday, October 11, 2010, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
She attended Texas Tech and summer school at Texas A&M University. It was during the summer while visiting her grandparents in Bryan that she met her future husband Winship Stedman “Pony” Allen. They were married for fifty-four years.
She is survived by her daughter Dr. Dorothy Ellen Allen of Nacogdoches, Texas. Dorothy Spent the last five years of her life in her daughter’s home where she was lovingly cared for by Karen, Tammie, Rhonda, Ada, Camilla, Helen, Shorty, Sandra, the staff of Hospice of East Texas, the ladies of Westminster Presbyterian Church and special friend Dr. Jane Robertson.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Winship Stedman “Pony” Allen, and brother William Richard Griffin Jr,
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Calvert for 75 years and at the time of her death was the oldest living member. She served in many areas in the church where she was a leader in WMU, a Sunday School teacher, coordinator of the church’s efforts in support of Samaritan’s Purse, the Hospitality House in Huntsville and other mission related events.
Pallbearers will be Bill Grigsby, Stedman Grigsby, Nick Turnham, Randy Wheless, Allen Wiese, Volney Alston, Nicki Lutz, and David Viscarte.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of the First Baptist Church, Calvert, Texas. Special Music will be provided by members of Stephen F. Austin State University Music Department.
