Ray was born on Jan. 28, 1927, in Lynchburg, VA, the son of Ernest Ray and Mary Cowins Benson. He served his country during WW II in the US Navy. He worked at J P Stevens as a cost accountant and upon his retirement, he founded Real Realty Company. Ray was of the Methodist faith, loved college basketball especially Duke, singing country music like George Jones with his son-in-law backing him on guitar. He was the best father in the world and a devoted husband to his loving wife Merle who preceded him in death in 1976. He loved his family and will be deeply missed.
Those surviving are his daughters Susan Benson Gleason and Linda Benson Royal along with their significant others Mark Fricke and Mark Royal, plus his grandson Ben Gleason, all of Greensboro, NC. Also is very special friend of 29 years, Betty Lindsey and her son Lenny Clark of Greenville, SC. Uncle Paul Cowins and wife Lucille, plus cousin Jean Fringer and husband Denny, all of Lynchburg, VA. Cousin Lewis Cowins of Danville, VA, and brother-in-law Joe Mitchell of Greensboro, NC. Ray was also loved by his animal grandchildren Ruby Sue, Mary Sue, Peggy Sue, Roxie, Tabby Sue, Pit, Jenny, and Zack.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm till service time on Saturday at Hanes Lineberry Vanstory Chapel.
